When & where will the program be held?

The writing retreat will be held near Lucca, in Italy on August 10 - 17, 2024. The program will be held in person.

Who should register to the program?

The retreat is open to writers and artists across different disciplines.

Is the program open only for writers of color?

No, anyone can register for the retreat.

What is the registration period?

Registrations will open in the Spring; space are limited, so please register early.

What is included in the retreat?

The program fee covers pick-up and drop-off from nearby airports; meals and lodging for the duration of the retreat; and guided excursions to neighboring cities. The program includes communal meals, daily generative exercises; workshops and guided sessions, talks, classes, as well as time to create and be in community with other writers and artists across genres and disciplines. The program fee does not cover travel expenses.

I have particular dietary restrictions. Can you accommodate that?

Yes, absolutely. Once registrations have closed, we will contact each participant to make sure all of their needs are met. If you have additional questions, feel free to contact us anytime.

What does lodging look like?

We will be staying in a beautiful historical villa in the Tuscan countryside, near the city of Lucca. The villa sits on three and half acres, surrounded by luscious gardens, and spectacular views of the nearby valley. The villa also boasts stunning frescoes, antique furniture, and quaint gathering places to inspire the creative mind, such as a beautifully lit gazebo, the notorious limonaia (a high-tech multifunctional space), and more. Participants will be staying in double occupancy rooms with shared bathroom. Amenities include a mini-fridge, safe, hair dryer, air conditioning/heating, complimentary drink service, daily cleaning services (except Sundays), high-speed wifi, cable/satellite TV in the living rooms, heated swimming pool, free parking, and more. There is also a fully equipped industrial size kitchen on site, as well as communal washers and dryers. There are grocery stores, markets, and pharmacies within walking distance. Anaphora staff will also assist participants with securing transportation for additional trips.

Can I attend the retreat with my friend/ partner/ S.O.?

Absolutely! We encourage you to attend the retreat with your friend(s), partner and/or significant other. Please indicate their name in the registration form so we can make the appropriate arrangements.

Do you offer fellowships?

Yes, we have several partial fellowships available. The number of fellowships varies based on available funds; please register early and indicate you’re interested in receiving the fellowship when you sign up. You will be notified after the end of the registration period.

Can international participants apply?

Yes, registrations are open to all, regardless of location and status; international writers are eligible to register for the retreat.
