Publishing Program FAQ

When & where will the program be held?

The Publishing Program is held virtually. The Fall cycle runs September 2024 - August 2025, and the Spring cycle runs

Who should apply to the program?

The Publishing Program is open to any writer interested in engaging in sustained work, in a supported environment by fellow writers, faculty and staff.

What’s the application period?

Applications are now open. The deadline for the Fall cycle is May 15, 2024. Please check the program’s website for more up to date information on the application period.

Is the program open only for writers of color?

No, the Publishing Program is open to writers of any background.

Do you need to have a manuscript to qualify for the program?

Not at all. The objective of the program is to help writers who are interested in charting their path to publication, by providing them with the learning environment, support through our community and our network of writers and experts in the publishing industry. You don’t need to have a manuscript in progress to qualify; but it does help if you’re working with a specific project in mind.

Can I attend partially?

Unfortunately, because of the rigorousness of the program, it is best to commit to the full year. The programming has been interspersed throughout the year, to allow ample time for writers to engage with their work, including generating new work, undertaking developmental edits, and polishing their projects as needed. This kind of work can be continuous, which is why a year-long program is ideal to sustain it.

Which genre should I apply to?

We currently support creative non-fiction, fiction, and poetry. Participants pursuing works of hybrid nature will have the chance to pursue their projects as well. Although all masterclasses are conducted with multi-genre elements of craft in mind, participants will be working in one genre primarily. In order to complete your work on time, we recommend that you focus on one project at a time.

I applied to program in one genre, but I changed my mind. Can I still pursue a different genre?

It is possible to pursue a project in a different genre, other than the one you’ve applied. However, the discretion will depend on the admission board of the program. For more details, please contact us.

Do you offer fellowships?

Every year, we offer several partial fellowships. The number of fellowships varies based on available funds; applications must be submitted by the priority deadline to be eligible for fellowships.

What are the fees to attend the program?

The program costs $6,400 for the full year, and it includes monthly masterclasses; genre-specific workshops which rotate every six-months (meaning you’ll be able to workshop your work with at least two speakers); sessions with professionals from the publishing industry (including literary agents, editors, and publishers); monthly meetings with support staff to help you meet your objective goals, and assistance with tools and resources to help you succeed in your writing journey (including: sending out your work for publication, querying and pitching process, polishing manuscripts, etc). Participants will also have the chance to attend the Conference & Pitch Fest, and exchanges will run every month.

Can international participants apply?

Yes, applications are open to all, regardless of location and status; international writers are eligible to apply for fellowships as well.
