Residency FAQ
When & where is the residency held?
The writing residency is held virtually in the winter (February) and in the summer (August) of each year.
What are the application dates?
Applications open in the summer for the winter residency, and in the winter for the summer residency. Please check the residency page for the most updated information.
Do you offer fellowships?
Every year, we offer several partial fellowships. The number of fellowships varies based on available funds; applications must be submitted by the priority deadline to be eligible for fellowships. All notifications of admission and fellowships will go out at the same time.
How do you manage admission?
Every year, we recruit an anonymous admission board of peers; they evaluate applications based on the quality and potential of the writing samples. The admission board does not have access to any biographical data of potential applicants. Program staff works closely with the admission board to distribute fellowships accordingly.
Can I apply in multiple genres?
Yes, you may apply both in prose and poetry, but you can only be accepted in one genre.
Can I defer my admission to the program?
Unfortunately deferment is not possible. If you’re not able to attend the residency, you will need to apply again.
Can I audit the program?
Unfortunately because the residency is fully of programming, auditing is not an option.
What are the fees to attend the program?
The program fees are $2,400, and include workshops, craft talks, daily readings (by guests and program participants), masterclasses, generative sessions, and discussions with professionals from the industry, including literary agents, editors, and publishers. There is no fee to apply for the program.
Can international writers apply?
Yes, applications are open to all writers of color, regardless of location and status; international writers are eligible to apply for fellowships as well.
What does the schedule look like?
The residency is held daily in Pacific Time, starting at 9:00am and ending at 5:00pm.
