About

Anaphora Literary Arts is a non-profit organization that advocates for writers and artists of color.

Anaphora seeks to: provide opportunities for emerging and established writers and artists of color through innovative and interdisciplinary programming; promote their work to the general public; and serve as a resource and learning center to research, develop and implement equitable practices in the literary arts field. Additionally, Anaphora is committed to preserve, promote and disseminate the works of traditionally marginalized writers and artists through outreach, advocacy, and educational projects.

Anaphora partners with different organizations, including educational institutions, community centers, nonprofit organizations, museums, art galleries, alternative spaces, artist and writer collectives, publishing presses, and minority-owned businesses to advance its mission, and to contribute and preserve the artistic excellence of marginalized communities.

Our program offering includes residencies, retreats, symposiums, conferences, festivals, writing bootcamps, and more. We continue to grow in our thinking and vision, to realign our objectives with the needs of the communities we serve.

We strive to build a healthy eco-system of inclusive programming through which writers and artists can thrive and give back to their own communities. We believe in a multi-disciplinary approach, in the active engagement of critical inquiry, in the significance of building intentional and meaningful relationships with members of our community.

Community-building is at the core of all of our programs; our impact is only possible because of the contributions of each of our fellows, alumnx, speakers, and the extended members of our communities.

We envision a world with a more equitable arts ecosystem that puts writers and artists first; a future in which artist communities can engage in innovative and sustainable models that disrupt traditional financial systems, where writers and artists of color can be supported, sustained and thrive in all the multi-faceted aspects of their creative practice.
